A fire interrupts traffic on the AP-7
On the night of May 18, 2026, a serious incident on the AP-7 motorway near Castellet i la Gornal, Barcelona, caused significant traffic disruptions. An accident involving two trucks, one of which was carrying aerosols, resulted in a fire that forced the closure of the road in both directions.
The Catalan Traffic Service (SCT) reported that, after intense efforts by the Firefighters of the Generalitat, one lane southbound was reopened. However, complications persist as the northbound lane remains closed and delays of up to three kilometres have been recorded.
Despite the impact of the fire and flames visible from several kilometres away, the drivers involved in the accident were unharmed. The Medical Emergency System (SEM) attended to both without the need to transfer them to a medical centre. This highlights the importance of preventive and rapid measures in critical situations.
Given the nature of the incident and the associated risks of transporting hazardous goods, the special emergency plan for accidents involving the transport of hazardous goods by road and rail in Catalonia (Transcat) was activated. This plan aims to ensure a coordinated response to situations that may endanger both road users and the environment.
Emergency services received around 60 calls alerting them to the fire. In light of this chaotic situation, authorities have advised drivers to use alternative routes such as the N-340 or the C-32 to avoid further inconveniences.
This incident once again underscores the importance of strictly following traffic rules and regulations related to the transport of hazardous goods. Collaboration between different emergency services was key to quickly controlling a situation that could have had much more serious consequences.
