Extreme temperatures have led to a ban on bonfires and fireworks in over 600 municipalities during the Sant Joan festivities. Authorities are taking measures to prevent wildfires.
This year’s Sant Joan celebrations in Catalonia will be markedly different due to unprecedented heat conditions. With temperatures soaring to 42.4 degrees Celsius in Lleida, the Generalitat has implemented strict regulations to mitigate wildfire risks.
The traditional festivities, known for their vibrant bonfires and fireworks, face significant limitations as authorities classify over 110 municipalities as having a «very high» risk of forest fires. In an additional 527 municipalities, where the danger is deemed «high,» precautions have been heightened.
The Generalitat’s decision includes a prohibition on bonfires and fireworks within 400 meters of agricultural or forested areas. This move aims to protect both people and the environment from potential disasters during what is typically one of the most festive nights of the year.
In Barcelona, special controls have been established by the Guardia Urbana in forested areas of Collserola Park, particularly in districts such as Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, Horta-Guinardó, and Nou Barris. These measures are designed to enforce compliance with the new regulations and ensure public safety.
The use of technology will also play a crucial role this year; drones will be deployed alongside traditional firefighting resources to monitor high-risk areas effectively. This integration of modern tools reflects a growing trend in disaster management that has gained traction since similar extreme weather events prompted changes across Europe.
The Sant Joan festival marks not only the shortest night of the year but also serves as an unofficial start to summer vacations for many Catalans. However, with these new restrictions in place, residents are urged to adapt their plans accordingly. The community is encouraged to celebrate responsibly while prioritizing safety amidst these challenging conditions.
As preparations continue for this iconic celebration, locals should stay informed about designated safe zones for any permitted activities and adhere strictly to guidelines issued by local authorities. For those looking for alternative ways to enjoy Sant Joan without risking fire hazards, consider attending organized events that comply with safety regulations or celebrating at home with indoor festivities.
