Imminent transformation in the heart of Girona
The emblematic Plaza de Espanya in Girona is about to undergo a significant transformation that promises to revitalise this central area of the city. According to statements from the Adif delegate in Catalonia, Àngel Contreras, the works will begin shortly and are expected to last approximately four months.
The project, awarded to the local company Rubau for an amount of 2.9 million euros, aims to convert what is currently a desolate space into a greener and more welcoming area. The redevelopment will include the planting of new trees and the partial removal of the old platforms that belonged to a now-obsolete bus station.
Among the most notable modifications is the removal of access to the station from Barcelona Street, which will allow for better pedestrian circulation and a safer environment for passers-by. The subdelegate of the Spanish government in Girona, Pere Parramon, has emphasised that the new design aims to create “a greener and friendlier space” for all citizens.
As this project progresses, Adif is also preparing the ground to collaborate with future developments in the area. The remaining part of the platforms will be removed when the works for the hotel projected by the owners of the adjacent land begin. This coordination is key to ensuring a smooth transition between both projects.
Local residents have expressed their enthusiasm for this initiative, hoping that it will not only beautify the area but also encourage greater public use of the space. With these works, Girona seeks not only to improve its urban infrastructure but also to strengthen its commitment to the environment and citizen well-being.
