The Barcelona Urban Guard has arrested an individual who attempted to squat the flat of a woman who had recently passed away. The events occurred in the Ciutat Vella district, where the deceased's grandson alerted the authorities after discovering that someone had changed the lock on the property and stolen belongings.
Details of the incident
Last Tuesday night, the grandson was managing his grandmother's inheritance when he noticed irregularities in the home. Upon arrival, he realised that the door locks had been replaced and that there was a person inside the apartment. He immediately contacted the Urban Guard to report the situation.
Shortly after, the officers arrived at the scene and were informed by the family member about what had happened. At that moment, they observed a man running out of the building. Thanks to the description provided by the grandson, the police were able to locate and intercept the suspect nearby.
During the search of the individual, the officers found nearly 1,500 euros in cash, as well as the mobile phone belonging to the deceased owner. These findings confirmed the initial suspicions about his criminal intentions.
The man was arrested and taken to the police station for questioning. The swift action of the Urban Guard prevented a more serious crime from being committed and allowed for the recovery of some of the stolen belongings.
This incident highlights a growing problem related to illegal squatting in Barcelona, especially in empty or abandoned properties following deaths. Authorities have intensified their efforts to combat this phenomenon, but cases like this demonstrate that much remains to be done to protect the rights of legitimate owners.
