The participatory process to elect the new Síndic de Greuges of Barcelona concluded with the participation of 2,707 citizens and 31 entities. David Bondia leads the support with over 76% of the total.
The citizen support phase for the election of the next Síndic or Síndica de Greuges of Barcelona has ended, clearly demonstrating the interest from the public in this democratic process. Since June 1, a total of 2,707 people and 31 entities have expressed their backing for the two presented candidacies: David Bondia and Gemma Calvet. This participatory mechanism, which has been conducted for the third time since its establishment in 2016, aims to bring this institutional figure closer to citizens and encourage their involvement in public affairs.
David Bondia has been the most supported candidate, accumulating 2,064 individual supports, representing a notable 76% of the total, in addition to receiving 25 endorsements from entities. On the other hand, Gemma Calvet received 643 supports, equivalent to 24%, along with 6 endorsements. The final election will take place in July during a session of the Plenary of the Municipal Council, where a qualified majority of two-thirds will be required to appoint the new Síndic.
The process was conducted through the municipal platform Decidim.Barcelona, which allowed all registered individuals over 16 years old to participate easily. Additionally, ten physical points were set up in different districts to facilitate in-person participation. This initiative not only seeks to gather opinions but also to generate a space for public debate on the proposals and priorities that each candidate has for the position.
During this period, various informative activities and public debates were held, allowing candidates to present their models to local social and economic representatives. The first debate took place on June 9 in an extraordinary session of the City Council, where both candidates outlined their visions on how to tackle the current challenges facing the Síndic.
The interest in this figure is significant; historically, the position has played a crucial role in defending and promoting citizens' rights in Barcelona. Compared to previous elections, this year has seen a notable increase in citizen participation compared to the previous process held in 2021.
Once this participatory phase is concluded, municipal technical teams will prepare a detailed report on the entire aforementioned process. This document will be shared with all municipal groups before the decisive vote scheduled for July.
The complete results can be consulted online via a link provided by the City Council. For those interested in following this electoral process or actively participating in future citizen initiatives, it is advisable to stay tuned to the updates offered by Decidim.Barcelona.
