Flying has always been one of those human fantasies that seemed reserved for birds, astronauts, and the occasional Marvel superhero. But it turns out there is a way to achieve it without a spandex suit or rocket: the wind tunnel. And in Barcelona, this experience has its own name.
The Barcelona wind tunnel of Windoor Realfly is one of those activities that, once tried, automatically becomes the answer to the question "what shall we do this weekend?" Located in Cornellà de Llobregat, just a step away from the centre of Barcelona, its facilities allow you to experience the sensation of free fall without having to get on a plane or sign any will.
What exactly is a wind tunnel and why are there so few?
A vertical wind tunnel is, essentially, a column of upward air generated by high-power turbines that suspends the human body. Physics does the work; you just have to enjoy it. What you feel inside is practically identical to a parachute jump from 4,000 meters, with the difference that the ground is just a meter away and there is an instructor with you at all times.
Now, this is not something you find on every corner. There are only five vertical wind tunnels open to the public in all of Spain, making this activity genuinely exclusive. Not due to price or access, but due to the physical scarcity of facilities. Windoor Realfly has two of those five: the one in Barcelona (at the RCDE Stadium in Cornellà) and the one in Empuriabrava, in the province of Girona, which opened in 2012 as the first wind tunnel in the entire Iberian Peninsula.
No prior experience, no age limits
One of the great myths of indoor skydiving is that you need to be an athlete, be young, or have some kind of prior training. Nothing could be further from the truth. The experience at Windoor is designed so that anyone can enjoy it from day one, and that includes children from 4 years old and adults of any age.
The process is simple and perfectly structured:
- Pre-flight theoretical class: before entering the tunnel, an instructor explains the basic positions and safety rules. Nothing intimidating, everything is clear.
- Flight with instructor: inside the tunnel, the instructor accompanies the participant at all times, correcting posture and ensuring a safe and memorable experience.
- Equipment included: flight suit, helmet, and goggles are included in the experience. There’s no need to bring anything special.
If you have a fear of heights, this is, curiously, the best plan you can make. All the adrenaline of free fall, none of the actual heights.
The memory also flies with you
Because an experience like this deserves to be recorded forever, Windoor offers the possibility of capturing the flight with professional photo and video. And at the end, each participant receives a flight certificate or diploma, that piece of paper that no one expected to need but everyone ends up framing.
The perfect excuse for any occasion
The wind tunnel is not just an individual leisure activity. It’s one of those plans that works equally well in very different contexts:
For going with friends, it’s hard to beat the combination of shared adrenaline and videos with panic-stricken faces that circulate in WhatsApp groups for weeks. With a partner, it’s an original date that breaks the predictable and creates memories that last much longer than a dinner. With family, it’s one of those rare activities where children and adults can participate with the same level of excitement, which is already a merit in itself.
But where the wind tunnel really shines is as an option for events and celebrations:
- Birthdays: original, memorable, and without the obligatory cake (although there are catering options available if you want one).
- Stag or hen parties: a classic that needed refreshing. The wind tunnel is the perfect alternative for those already fed up with joke band-aid dinners and colourful confetti.

Two facilities, two experiences
Windoor Barcelona is integrated into the RCDE Stadium complex in Cornellà, featuring state-of-the-art German ISG technology. It opened in December 2019 and is noted for the smoothness and power of the airflow it generates.
Windoor Empuriabrava, on the other hand, has its own history and character. It was the first tunnel on the peninsula, opened in 2012, and has been flying people from all over for over twelve years. Additionally, it operates on 100% renewable energy, making it the only tunnel in the world with a completely neutral ecological footprint. Not bad for a place where they basically throw you into the air.
Both facilities have a bar and catering options, making it easy to organise a full day without needing to move to another location.
An activity that has no real equivalent
There are many leisure experiences available, but few have the ability to generate the immediate impact that flying in a tunnel does. Not because it’s extreme in a dangerous sense, but because it activates something very primal: the sensation of floating. The human body is not designed for that, and that’s precisely why it is so surprising and so hard to forget.
The certificate at the end is not a minor detail. It’s the recognition that something that seemed impossible, that specific afternoon, turned out to be completely real.
