A tournament that makes history in women's tennis
La Bisbal d’Empordà will become the epicentre of women's tennis between April 27 and May 3, hosting the prestigious Catalonia Open WTA 125. This event, celebrating its fourth edition, is organised by the Federació Catalana de Tennis and will bring together the best players in the world in a competitive and festive atmosphere.
Among the participants are notable names such as Barbora Krejcikova, a two-time Grand Slam champion, and Katerina Siniakova, who has won ten Grand Slam titles in doubles. The young Filipino prospect Alexandra Eala is also expected to attend, along with Spain's number one, Jessica Bouzas, and Hungary's Dalma Galfi.
This year, the tournament boasts a total prize pool of 115,000 dollars. The funding primarily comes from the Federació Catalana, with additional support from the Diputació de Girona and the Sports Department of the Generalitat. This backing is crucial to ensure a successful event that highlights female talent in sports.
There will be more than just sports competition; complementary activities have also been scheduled. On May 1, coinciding with the Diada del Tennis Gironí, a conference on the role of women in sports will take place. Additionally, there will be live demonstrations of wheelchair tennis, promoting an inclusive message within the sports arena.
The tournament will be particularly significant for Ampurdanese tennis player Aliona Bolsova, who will officially bid farewell to the circuit after participating in this event. On May 2, following her final appearance on the courts during the doubles final, she will be honoured for her outstanding professional career.
After the Catalonia Open WTA 125, La Bisbal d’Empordà will host the ITF W35, taking place in Platja d’Aro from May 4 to 10. This tournament also promises to be an exciting spectacle on clay, with a total prize pool reaching 30,000 dollars.
