Online gambling advances faster than the law

Betting platforms are growing in Chile while the Senate still hasn't finalised the law. Here's what to consider before registering.

Any given Sunday in Santiago, Concepción or Antofagasta looks quite similar: match on the TV, the WhatsApp group buzzing, and some cousin who insists, with total conviction, that "the draw is a sure thing". Sports betting has infiltrated Chilean football conversations almost without asking for permission, and today it's hard to find someone who hasn't seen advertisements for some platform on a shirt, a billboard, or a video on social media.

The problem is that the supply is growing much faster than the information. Therefore, before entering your card details on the first site that appears, it's worth checking an updated comparison of online betting houses in Chile, where aspects such as security, payment methods, or bonus conditions are analysed. It's ten minutes of reading that could save you more than one headache, and a few pesos.

Because here comes the less glamorous part: the Chilean legal framework is still halfway there.

A huge market with rules half-written

According to data from the Superintendence of Gaming Casinos, from Chile you can access about 900 online gambling sites, in a market that moves between 130 and 170 million dollars a year. The vast majority operate from abroad, with licenses from jurisdictions such as Malta or Curacao.

The judiciary has already weighed in on the matter. The Supreme Court ordered the blocking of unlicensed sports betting sites to operate in the country and made it clear that only Polla Chilena de Beneficencia, Lotería, and Teletrak are authorised to offer online gambling. Translated into the language of the stands: the rest are playing outside the regulated field, even though the ball keeps rolling.

A law with more extensions than a final

The project aimed at regulating online betting platforms entered Congress on 7 March 2022. The Chamber of Deputies approved it in 2023, and the Senate gave it the green light in general in August 2025, with 27 votes in favour, 3 against, and 5 abstentions. Since then, the discussion has continued in committees, and the deadline for presenting amendments has been stretched until the end of October 2026.

To complicate matters, senators like Gastón Saavedra and Paulina Núñez have proposed amendments that directly prohibit online betting platforms, as they believe the government's version is too permissive regarding gambling addiction. The debate has shifted from discussing how to regulate to discussing whether to regulate or close the door.

What would change with regulation

If the text goes ahead, the current Superintendence would become the Superintendence of Casinos, Betting, and Gambling, which would be responsible for granting operating licenses and maintaining a registry of authorised platforms. Operating without a license would be illegal in every sense. Among the stated objectives of the project are limiting access for minors and ensuring that the state collects taxes from an activity that currently almost entirely eludes it.

What to consider before registering

While legislators decide, many people continue to bet. If you are going to do it, make sure to do so with your eyes wide open.

Company license and details

A serious platform shows who is behind it, in which country it has its license, and which body supervises it. If you have to scroll down to the very last pixel of the footer to find this information and it still doesn't appear, that's a bad sign. Also check that the website uses encrypted connection and that it has terms and conditions in Spanish that can be understood without needing a lawyer by your side.

Bonuses with small print

Welcome bonuses are the digital equivalent of free samples at the supermarket: they are very tempting, but it's wise to read the label. Pay attention to the wagering requirement (how many times you need to play the bonus before you can withdraw it), the minimum odds required, and the time frame to meet it. A bonus of 100,000 pesos that requires you to bet 30 times its value in a week looks more like homework than a gift.

Payments and withdrawals

Depositing is always super easy; withdrawing, not so much. Before opening an account, check what payment methods the platform accepts, how long it takes to process a withdrawal, and if it charges fees. Keep in mind that, when operating from abroad, claims become complicated: there is currently no specific Chilean regulator to complain to if something goes wrong, and that is precisely what the future law aims to change.

Gambling wisely

This is the least fun part of the article, but the most useful. Betting is paid entertainment, just like a ticket to the stadium: the money you put in is already spent, and any winnings are a bonus. Some rules that work:

  • Set a monthly budget and do not increase it to "recover" what you've lost.
  • Activate the deposit limit and self-exclusion tools that serious platforms offer.
  • Never bet with money intended for bills, rent, or food.
  • Be wary of anyone selling "sure predictions": if they really existed, they wouldn't be selling them on Telegram.

If you notice that you think about betting more than you should, that you hide your spending, or that you borrow money to keep playing, it's advisable to talk to someone you trust or a health professional. Football can be enjoyed just as much without money at stake, and your cousin on WhatsApp will still be wrong about the draw, no matter who bets.
