Significant improvements on Barcelona's Line 10
Line 10 of the Barcelona metro, known for its route connecting the Zona Franca with other key points in the city, is undergoing a series of technical improvements that promise to optimize the safety and efficiency of the service. During this Holy Week, crucial work is being carried out on the viaduct that crosses this area, where weather conditions have presented unique challenges since its inauguration six years ago.
The Departament de Territori of the Generalitat has announced that modifications are being made to the signalling and circulation system of the section between the Zona Franca and Foc stations. These works, which involve an investment of approximately 3.5 million euros, are part of a second phase aimed at improving the automatic braking time of the metro. This advancement is particularly relevant given that the trains operate without a driver and require a reliable system under various weather conditions.
Previous issues related to braking became evident during rainfall, when trains failed to stop at the designated points. To mitigate this risk, Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) had implemented temporary procedures from its control centre. However, thanks to collaboration with Siemens Mobility, a new system has been developed that ensures uniform operation regardless of the weather.
To facilitate these essential works, TMB has decided to temporarily suspend the service of the southern branch of Line 10 from Can Tries Gornal to ZAL Riu Vell, from Friday to Monday. This interruption strategically coincides with school holidays, when a lower influx of users is expected. An alternative shuttle bus service will be available to cover this route during the affected days.
As these improvements are implemented, Line 10 is expected to enhance not only its operational safety but also its capacity to handle a greater volume of passengers in the future. Currently, around 12,500 daily users utilise this line on weekdays; however, a significant increase is anticipated as it extends towards Badalona and other metropolitan areas.
