A change of direction on the horizon
With Carme Portaceli's term as artistic director of the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya (TNC) coming to an end, a crucial period opens for the emblematic theatre space. The recent selection of a dozen candidates from the 40 submitted marks the beginning of a process that will culminate in June with the election of the new director. Glòria Balañà also highlights the importance of supporting female creators and fostering original productions that have a prolonged life both on and off the stage. “It is essential to establish connections with other European theatres to project our stage creation,” Balañà points out, thus underscoring a commitment to greater diversity and inclusion in the performing arts.
As the next director of the TNC is being shaped, debates arise about the necessary qualities for this role. Victoria Szpunberg proposes that this person should have a strong public awareness and be able to manage both the artistic and institutional aspects. For his part, Sergi Belbel advocates for someone with enough experience to consolidate careers without losing focus on new creations.
As the final decision approaches on who will take the reins of the TNC, it is clear that this process is not just administrative; it is an opportunity to revitalize the Catalan theatrical landscape. With diverse voices calling for a bold and inclusive approach, the future of the TNC could mark a new chapter in its history, one where both tradition and innovation are prioritized.
