Uncertainty in railway transport
The mayors of Falset and Móra la Nova have raised their voices over the lack of information regarding the reopening of the railway service on the R15 line, which has been closed since late January due to infrastructure deficiencies. This situation has created a climate of frustration among citizens, who rely on this means for their commutes to cities like Barcelona, Reus, and Tarragona.
The mayors, Carlos Brull and Jesús Álvarez, have expressed their discontent at feeling ignored in this process. “We have no official news whatsoever,” Brull stated, while Álvarez highlighted that they do not know “the execution timelines or what phase the works are in.” Both mayors have decided to join forces to demand clear and swift answers that will allow the railway service to be restored.
Despite the efforts made by Renfe to provide alternative road services, the mayors believe these options are insufficient. Although a free bus has been set up connecting Falset with Barcelona via Reus and Tarragona, users still face long waits and additional complications. “People cannot afford to waste time travelling for three or four hours,” Brull emphasised.
The lack of efficient transport is severely affecting rural communities. The mayors warn that this situation could contribute to the depopulation of their municipalities. “The uncertainty about public transport makes many question whether it is worth living here,” Brull expressed. The concern is palpable among local residents, who see their quality of life compromised.
Aside from the closure of the R15 service, the physical conditions of the stations are also a cause for concern. In Móra la Nova, users must travel to Plaza Sant Jordi due to the degradation of the railway environment. The mayor has taken measures to clean the area around the station, although he acknowledges the difficulties in obtaining necessary permits: “We are ashamed to have a station in this state,” Álvarez commented.
Both mayors have made an urgent call to Adif and the Ministry of Transport for clear information regarding the current state of the railway service and future plans. The community awaits concrete answers that will allow them to regain an essential means of their daily mobility.
