The Bonos Consumo campaign by the Barcelona City Council has already distributed 15,000 discounts of 10 euros. The mayor, Jaume Collboni, presents it as a boost to local commerce.

The 10 euro vouchers have already reached 15,000 Barcelonians since the initiative began on October 13. This was explained by the mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, during an event about the future of the city organised by Barcelona Oberta.

According to Collboni, so far 1,700 businesses have signed up, and there are 70,000 residents registered to request the vouchers. The campaign excludes large commercial chains, and the mayor claims this decision has benefited local shops, many of which are SMEs and self-employed.

“Today many people are shopping in their local stores.”

The City Council allocates a municipal investment of four million euros to the initiative, which estimates an economic impact of 12 million euros in the sector. To use the voucher, purchases of at least 30 euros must be made at participating establishments.

Collboni has linked the campaign to a broader issue. According to him, deciding where to shop is also about deciding what kind of city you want to build.

“Deciding where to shop is deciding what city we are making.”

In parallel, the mayor has defended regulating commercial rents in areas with a tense real estate market or significant tourist impact, to curb the gentrification of traditional shops. He has warned of increases of up to 100% in some premises and has proposed that limits be set on how much a rent can rise in these areas.
