The offer for the Ágora del Raval site is around 3.5 to 4 million euros. The eviction was suspended while negotiations with Sareb progress.

Barcelona City Council has an unfinalised offer of between 3.5 and 4 million euros to acquire the site known as Ágora Juan Andrés Benítez or Ágora del Raval, located at calle Aurora, 13. This was explained by Jordi Valls, deputy mayor of Economy, during the Commission of Ecology, Urbanism, Mobility and Housing held this week.

The space has been managed since 2014 by a community assembly that pays tribute to Juan Andrés Benítez, a Raval resident who died a year earlier following a police detention. The property belongs to Sareb, which had scheduled the eviction for October 15. That process was halted a week earlier, on October 8, when the council began negotiating the purchase.

“Between 3.5 and 4 million euros not finalised for the acquisition”

According to Valls, the site allows for the construction of twenty to twenty-five homes. The councillor argues that the offer is not an improvised decision, as negotiations with Sareb have been ongoing for some time. For now, the City Council has not defined what use the land will have if it is eventually acquired.

From the Ágora assembly, the entity claims that the space meets social needs in the neighbourhood and demands that its self-managed character be maintained. The assembly itself previously reported that Sareb had requested the eviction and called on the council for concrete measures to prevent the site from disappearing.

Valls has indicated that the fate of the site will be decided later on, once the purchase is finalised. Regarding its use, the deputy mayor emphasised that Raval has very little available land, both for housing and green areas, and made it clear that uses will be negotiated first and then decided.
