Barcelona City Council requests the Ministry of Transport to name the future Sagrera station after Pasqual Maragall. The AVE station is expected to be operational in 2032.
The proposal was announced by the mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, in an interview on Catalunya Ràdio. According to the City Council, the request has already been formally submitted to the Ministry of Transport, which will have to decide on the name of the future central AVE station in the city.
The council aims to pay tribute to the former mayor and president of the Generalitat, Pasqual Maragall, who promoted the idea of a northern entrance to the city. Collboni described him as follows:
«The first mayor who dreamed of this northern entrance looking towards Europe».
The mayor also defended the former councilman's role in advocating for rail transport. According to Collboni, Maragall was very aware that the future of public transport lay in railways, and the Sagrera will, in his words, be a station of stations.
Maragall is 85 years old and has been living with Alzheimer's for two decades, a condition he made public in October 2007. According to his family, he leads a quiet life away from public activity. He became a widower in 2020 after the death of Diana Garrigosa and remains under the care of his family.
His daughter, Cristina Maragall, chairs the Pasqual Maragall Foundation, created in 2008 at the initiative of the former president to promote research and prevention of the disease.
For the people of Barcelona, the Ministry's decision will determine the name by which the large railway hub in the north of the city will be known, with its opening scheduled for 2032. Until the Government responds, the name remains unconfirmed.
