Catalonia is below the Spanish average in quality of life and ranks twelfth among the communities. 23.9% of Catalans are at risk of poverty or exclusion.

The Multidimensional Quality of Life Indicator from the National Institute of Statistics places Catalonia in twelfth position, below the national average of 101.74 points. This data is reported by El Debate, which summarises the results published by the state agency.

The indicator measures the overall life experience based on factors such as the environmental context, work, health, education, leisure, security, governance, and basic rights. After three years of setbacks between 2019 and 2022, the index has recorded three years of improvement.

In 2025, the Spanish average rose by three tenths, but Catalonia barely advanced by 0.14 points. The national growth was more than double that of Catalonia, with the communities that improved the most being Madrid, with 0.59 points, and Valencia, with 0.5.

By areas, Catalonia excels in education, work, and health, while it achieves poorer results in governance, basic rights, social relations, and leisure. The difference with Madrid reaches 1.36 points.

The report also addresses the economic situation of families. According to the INE, 23.9% of Catalans are at risk of poverty or social exclusion, a percentage that rises to 34.8% among those under 16 years old. Furthermore, 22% of the population reports having difficulties making ends meet.

The data shows that the highest quality of life is concentrated in the north of the country, with Navarra leading at 105.43 points. The quality of life and GDP of each territory do not follow the same trajectory, according to the indicator itself.
