The president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, positions the general elections on November 29 as a clash between a multilateral model and a world divided into large blocs.

According to El Periódico, the president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, spoke this Monday in Barcelona, during the forum World in Progress, about what he considers a decisive dispute in Spain ahead of the general elections on November 29. According to his proposal, democracy and authoritarianism are at odds in that appointment, or in other words, reinforced multilateral institutions versus a world split into large blocs.

Before the audience in the auditorium, Illa argued that, in a turbulent international context, it is necessary to offer certainties and respond to the needs of citizens. He proposed resorting to reason and science to counter what he believes is a dehumanization driven by the far right. Although he acknowledged the risks of the moment, he wanted to focus his speech on opportunities and assured that he would not allow the questioning of institutions or democratic values.

"Progress must be linked to human values."

In that vein, the president maintained that progress cannot be separated from the needs of citizens in a world that, he said, is moving towards a worrying dehumanization. He also committed to preserving plurality and the right of each person to be who they want, a reference to beliefs, identities, gender expressions, and sexual orientation. Illa also spoke of Catalonia as a promoter of human dignity, and in the midst of the pre-campaign, he stated that Catalonia chooses democracy.

Illa also placed the president of the United States, Donald Trump, at the centre of his remarks, accusing him of leading an administration that wants to destroy Europe and which, he said, must be confronted. This message comes on the eve of the U.S. legislative elections on November 3, which will measure support for the president's management and set the path towards the presidential elections of 2028. Polls suggest that it is likely the Democrats will gain control of the House of Representatives.

Illa's words came during a conference on Latin America in which he participated alongside former Colombian Trade Minister Sergio Díaz-Granados, executive president of CAF-Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean. The president advocated for an open economy with clear rules and more collaboration between Europe and Latin America, because, he said, there is a very important level of trade. The Generalitat is preparing a specific plan to explore opportunities in the region, supported by the four delegations of the Govern and the seven offices of Acció.
