Starting tomorrow, Girona will host the filming of Disney's live-action adaptation of Tangled, featuring over 600 extras. The production is expected to boost local tourism significantly.

Beginning tomorrow, the historic city of Girona will serve as a stunning backdrop for Disney’s live-action film adaptation of Tangled, based on the beloved tale of Rapunzel. With a crew exceeding 500 professionals, preparations have been underway to transform iconic locations such as the Cathedral and the surrounding areas into a cinematic wonderland.

The Cathedral of Girona, renowned for its impressive architecture, is set to feature prominently in several scenes. Today, technicians were busy assembling elaborate sets within the cathedral itself and in nearby locations like the Plaza de los Apòstols and Passeig Arqueològic. Approximately 600 extras are expected to participate in this grand production.

This isn’t the first time Girona has been chosen as a filming location; it previously gained international fame when it was featured in the sixth season of Game of Thrones. That series alone had a significant impact on local tourism, drawing visitors eager to explore its filming sites. A local business owner noted that many tourists still flock to Girona because of its association with that popular show.

The current film shoot will also extend beyond the Cathedral. Other notable sites include the ancient walls and streets leading up to Sant Domènec, which are being prepared for various scenes. Last week, production teams were spotted at Santes Creus Monastery before moving on to Besalú later this month.

Despite some businesses temporarily closing their doors due to filming restrictions, many owners remain optimistic about the long-term benefits this project will bring. The economic impact from previous productions has been substantial; for instance, last month’s filming for Amazon’s Tomb Raider generated around 1.5 million euros in direct economic activity through lodging and services.

The Girona Film Commission reports an average of 70 film shoots annually, with 80 productions authorized last year alone across various media formats including commercials and social media content. This consistent influx not only supports local businesses but also enhances Girona’s reputation as a prime location for filmmakers.

The bustling activity surrounding today’s preparations was palpable even amidst tourist foot traffic on this warm July day. Visitors could still access parts of the cathedral while crews worked diligently behind large curtains that concealed much of their setup work inside.

A source close to the production hinted at an exciting scene involving a coronation taking place within these historic walls.

This latest venture promises not just immediate excitement but also potential future gains for Girona’s economy as it continues to establish itself as a favored destination for filmmakers worldwide. As filming progresses over the coming days, locals and tourists alike can expect some disruptions but should keep an eye out for opportunities to witness movie magic firsthand.
