The renowned theater company Focus celebrates its 40th anniversary with a lineup of new and returning productions, showcasing prominent Catalan talent. This season promises to engage audiences across Barcelona's four theaters.
Celebrating four decades of theatrical excellence, Focus has unveiled an ambitious program for the upcoming season, featuring both fresh premieres and beloved revivals. Founded by a group of theater enthusiasts in the Turó de la Peira neighborhood of Barcelona, the company has evolved into a cultural cornerstone under the leadership of its founder, Daniel Martínez de Obregón. His son, César Martínez de Obregón, now takes the reins alongside a dedicated team that aims to carry forward their legacy.
This year’s lineup includes notable adaptations such as La promesa de l’alba, penned by acclaimed actor and director Josep Maria Flotats. This autobiographical work by Romain Gary explores themes of identity and familial expectations. Another highlight is El botí, a sharp comedy by Joe Orton that critiques societal corruption, featuring performances by Pere Arquillué.
The season also sees the return of popular productions like Germans de sang, which has captivated audiences with its compelling narrative. Directed by Daniel Anglès, this musical will run for nearly three months at the Paral·lel Theater, showcasing a talented cast including Mariona Castillo and Albert Salazar.
The focus on female narratives continues with several new works directed by women. Among them is Morning sun, which delves into urban loneliness through powerful performances led by Míriam Iscla and Anna Güell. Additionally, Joan Yago’s adaptation titled Un lloc comú, featuring an all-female cast, promises to resonate deeply with contemporary audiences.
This season’s offerings are not just about new stories; they also celebrate classics like Arthur Miller’s iconic play, Panorama des del pont. Directed by Sílvia Munt, this production aims to bring renewed relevance to Miller’s exploration of personal sacrifice and moral dilemmas.
The financial backing for this extensive program is substantial; Focus has allocated a budget of €14.5 million for approximately 60 performances throughout the season. This mirrors last year’s figures closely when they reported €14.7 million in revenue and attracted over half a million spectators.
“Our goal is to maintain high artistic standards while making theater accessible to everyone,” said Isabel Vidal, executive director of Focus.
The company’s commitment to diversity in storytelling is evident in their choice of plays that reflect various social issues and human experiences. With adaptations from both classic literature and contemporary works, Focus aims to engage audiences from all walks of life.
