The Spanish Ministry of Culture has approved a €500,000 budget to restore the crumbling walls of Tossa de Mar. This emergency intervention aims to enhance safety and preserve a key historical site.
The historic walls of Tossa de Mar, a major tourist attraction on the Catalan coast, are set to undergo significant restoration thanks to a €500,000 investment from the Spanish Ministry of Culture. The Council of Ministers approved this emergency measure on September 8, 2026, in response to concerns over the structural integrity of the fortifications.
This initiative targets specific areas within the wall that have shown signs of deterioration, particularly three towers: les Hores, d’es Codolar, and d’en Jonàs. These structures have been identified as at risk for potential collapses due to visible cracks and degraded mortar joints.
In addition to repairing these towers, the project will stabilize a rocky slope at the base of the wall and fix several broken steps leading up to the walkway along the fortifications. Archaeological monitoring will accompany all restoration efforts to ensure that any historical artifacts uncovered during work are preserved.
“This intervention is crucial not only for safety but also for preserving our cultural heritage,” said a spokesperson from the Ministry.
The responsibility for executing this project falls to the Instituto del Patrimonio Cultural de España (IPCE), which specializes in heritage conservation. The walls of Tossa de Mar are recognized as one of Catalunya’s best-preserved examples of medieval fortifications along its coastline.
Access to certain areas atop these walls was restricted by local police in late June due to fears that falling debris could pose risks to visitors and nearby restaurant patrons. With this new funding approval, officials hope that repairs can commence swiftly.
Tossa de Mar’s fortified walls date back between the 12th and 14th centuries and encompass approximately 300 meters in perimeter. They feature four prominent towers alongside seven circular towers that contribute significantly to their historical value.
“The restoration will help recover an essential part of our public space,” noted local authorities.
The Torre de les Hores is particularly notable as it once housed a public clock; it stands near the main entrance. The Torre d’es Codolar serves as a tribute tower located on the western side, while Torre d’en Jonàs overlooks the eastern edge facing out toward the bay.
This restoration effort marks an important step in safeguarding Tossa de Mar’s architectural legacy while ensuring visitor safety. Residents and tourists alike can expect updates on access restrictions as work progresses over coming months.
