The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, became the centre of attention during the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Planeta Awards, which took place last Thursday in Madrid. With a striking red dress reminiscent of the famous film The Woman in Red, her presence overshadowed other dignitaries present, including the mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida and the Minister of Culture Ernest Urtasun. This event not only commemorated a literary milestone but also highlighted the cultural and social importance of the award in Spain.
A Tribute to Spanish Literature
The event was organised by the Planeta publishing group and featured a strong Catalan representation, including the group's president, José Crehueras, and the delegate of the Govern in Madrid, Núria Marín. During his speech, Crehueras thanked the presence of the award winners and finalists over the decades, emphasising that “a society that reads is a better society.” This year, 41 awardees attended since the foundation of the award by José Manuel Lara, who established it in honour of his wife.
Throughout the night, homage was paid not only to the current winners but also to those who have left a mark on the Spanish literary world. Among them was the writer Eduardo Mendoza, who shared anecdotes about his passion for football and his love for FC Barcelona. Mendoza even proposed modifying the award's rules to be able to present himself again.
Díaz Ayuso was accompanied by other prominent figures such as Pilar Eyre, as well as recognised writers like Sandra Barneda, Carme Rigalt, and Mari Pau Janer. The evening culminated in a cocktail where various topics from literature to politics were discussed.
Despite being an event focused on literature, it was evident that Díaz Ayuso knew how to capture all eyes. However, other politicians present seemed less comfortable with such media attention. The leader of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, tried to avoid being captured in photographs alongside her during the final session.
