The municipal group Junts has urged the mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, to implement actions that ensure the continuity of the city's historic restaurants. This request arises due to the difficulties these establishments face in adapting to the new regulations in force, which jeopardises their permanence.
Challenges for iconic restaurants
Councillor Joana Ortega, representing Junts, has announced that she will present this request at the Commission of Economy and Finance of the city council. In a statement issued last Saturday, Ortega highlighted that many of these venues have served the community for decades and, although they do not meet all the requirements to be considered ‘iconic’, they are an integral part of the social and cultural fabric of Barcelona.
“Some restaurants are experiencing a mismatch between their actual activity and the license they hold,” Ortega explained. This phenomenon is due to circumstances beyond the owners' control, who are forced to deal with regulations that do not take into account the particularities of their businesses.
Junts emphasises the urgent need to review these regulations. The councillor argued that “they cannot disappear because they are part of the landscape, the identity, and the imagery of our neighbourhoods.” Therefore, they are asking the municipal government to study legislative modifications that would allow these establishments to adapt without having to close their doors.
Additionally, Junts proposes to create a detailed census of the historic restaurants affected by these restrictive regulations. This measure would allow for the identification of the most vulnerable venues and facilitate the design of specific policies for their protection. The idea is to ensure not only their immediate survival but also to promote generational transitions in these family businesses.
“It is essential to guarantee the future of these restaurants as an integral part of Barcelona's gastronomic heritage,” Ortega added during her speech.
As the year 2026 progresses, the debate on how to balance urban development and cultural preservation becomes increasingly relevant in Barcelona. Historic restaurants not only offer a unique culinary experience; they are also living witnesses of local history and contribute significantly to tourism in the city.
