A significant change for Barcelona's cultural memory
The Virrei Amat Square, located in the Porta neighbourhood within the Nou Barris district, is on the brink of a change that could restore its former name: Joan Salvat-Papasseit Square. This movement, supported by a recent petition among residents, has been approved by the district council, marking an important step towards the recovery of historical memory.
Currently, the square honours Manuel d’Amat i de Junyent, an aristocrat and colonial military figure who was viceroy of Peru during the 18th century. Although his legacy includes the construction of the iconic Palau de la Virreina, many citizens believe it is time to recognise more representative figures of contemporary Catalan thought.
Joan Salvat-Papasseit, a poet and writer born in 1894, is known for his commitment to cultural Catalanism and his literary work that challenged the social norms of his time. His figure represents a vital part of Barcelona's cultural heritage, prompting residents to request this change.
With the initial approval in Nou Barris, the next step will be to present this proposal to the local government led by Jaume Collboni. The initiative will be elevated to the Nomenclature Commission, responsible for technically assessing proposed changes to streets and squares. This body will analyse whether there are sufficient grounds to justify the change and will issue a favourable report if deemed appropriate.
Once a positive ruling is obtained, a public information period will be opened where citizens can submit objections. Subsequently, if everything proceeds smoothly, the mayor's office will sign the decree officialising the new name. This will involve not only a symbolic change but also logistical adjustments; identification plaques will be updated and official maps modified.
Furthermore, if this name change materialises, it is likely that Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) will make necessary adjustments to rename the metro station currently known as Virrei Amat. This modification would be an integral part of the effort to reflect an identity more in line with current cultural values.
