Catalonia sets a new record in employment
In a month that has surprised analysts and economists, Catalonia has achieved a new historic high in the number of affiliates to Social Security. According to data published by the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, the autonomous community added 50,034 new contributors in May, reaching a total of 3,971,167 affiliates.
This increase not only represents a significant figure but also positions Catalonia as the region with the highest job creation in Spain during this period. In comparison, the Balearic Islands and Madrid generated 48,193 and 25,082 new jobs respectively, underscoring the importance of Catalan growth.
Breaking down the data by provinces, Barcelona leads with 27,448 new jobs, followed by Girona with 8,174, Lleida with 7,552, and Tarragona, which adds approximately 6,900 new affiliates. A notable aspect is the significant advance in the agricultural sector, where 6,148 additional contributors were registered, representing a 29% month-on-month increase.
Not only has the number of affiliates shown a positive trend; unemployment has also decreased considerably in May, with a drop of 6,900 people. This leaves the total number of unemployed in Catalonia at 307,627, marking the lowest level since May 2008.
Miquel Sàmper, the Minister of Business and Labour, highlighted that this positive trend is observed among both men and women and spans all economic sectors. “May is once again very positive,” Sàmper stated regarding the recent figures.
As Catalonia approaches the psychological threshold of 4 million affiliates, expectations for the coming months are encouraging. With an increasingly robust economy and various initiatives to promote employment, this trend is expected to continue.
