An unexpected turn in the beef market
The beef sector in Spain is experiencing a significant change in its prices, marking the end of a period of historically high prices. After two years in which farmers achieved average profits of 650 euros per animal, the figures have begun to decline, currently standing at 450 euros. This change has been analysed by Eliseu Isla, director of the ruminants area at the Ivars Cooperative, who highlighted that such high profitability had never been seen in three decades.
The recent drop in prices is attributed to several factors. Violeta Sancho, director of the beef market at Mercolleida, pointed out that one of the main reasons is the decrease in consumption due to the high price of beef in the family basket. Additionally, there has been a recovery in livestock numbers, which has contributed to a widespread increase in supply.
Despite the increase in livestock numbers this year — a 2% rise according to Eurostat — the context remains complicated. In previous years, figures had fallen due to the forced culling of livestock due to droughts and economic issues. The situation was further complicated by the temporary export ban caused by nodular dermatitis.
Despite the challenging outlook, there are positive signs for the future. Countries like Libya and Lebanon have reopened their markets to Spanish exports, although Morocco has yet to make decisions in this regard. This could offer new opportunities for local producers if they can quickly adapt to current fluctuations.
Amid these changes, the IX edition of the PronosVac Awards was recently held at La Llotja de Lleida. This event recognised prominent analysts in the sector such as Eliseu Isla and other professionals like Jordi Cabau and Pau Salse. These awards are a testament not only to the talent present in the sector but also a reminder of the critical importance of accurate and timely analysis to navigate uncertain times.
