A different summer on the beaches of Barcelona
With the arrival of warm weather, Barcelona is gearing up to welcome thousands of tourists and locals to its iconic beaches. This year, the City Council has launched an ambitious campaign promising a 26% increase in cleaning services and the installation of 11 new surveillance cameras. The initiative was presented by Mayor Jaume Collboni, who highlighted the importance of maintaining a safe and clean environment during the summer months.
The plan includes an increase in cleaning personnel, with 295 additional staff, representing a 40% rise. Additionally, 138 more services will be implemented to ensure the beaches are in optimal condition. This measure responds to a significant decrease in public concerns about cleanliness, according to the latest municipal barometers.
The summer season also coincides with several international events that will affect mobility in the city. Notable among them are the visit of the Pope, the start of the Tour de France, the Formula 1 Grand Prix, and festivals like Primavera Sound and Sónar. These activities require careful planning to ensure that both residents and visitors can enjoy without inconveniences.
The installed cameras will not only serve to deter criminal acts but will also enhance the response capability to any incidents. Alongside this, 20 new motorcycles have been added to the Guàrdia Urbana fleet to facilitate quick interventions during the busiest months.
Collboni also emphasized two key legislative changes: the new law against repeat offenders and modifications to the municipal civility ordinance. These regulations aim to toughen penalties for minor infractions, thereby contributing to a more peaceful environment during the summer.
Despite the increase in tourism, the City Council is committed to maintaining harmonious coexistence between visitors and residents. With these comprehensive measures, Barcelona hopes to provide not only clean beaches but also safe ones, where everyone can enjoy without worries.
