A Breather for Maresme
Maresme has experienced a positive change in its unemployment rate, marking a milestone in March 2026 by recording a decrease of 361 people seeking employment. This reduction has brought the total number of job seekers to 19,725, placing the regional rate at 8.58%. This figure is encouraging, especially after months of labour uncertainty.
Despite the overall decline, the figures reveal significant disparities among the different municipalities of Maresme. For example, Cabrera de Mar ranks as the municipality with the lowest rate, reaching only 4.83%, while Pineda de Mar faces the most critical situation with 11.48%. Other municipalities like Tordera (10.69%) and Mataró (10.32%) also exceed the 10% threshold, indicating that there is still work to be done to balance the labour market in the region.
Despite the good news overall regarding the reduction of unemployment, there are concerning sectors. The youth group (aged 16 to 24) has seen a year-on-year increase of 7.03%, raising questions about the job opportunities available for this age group. Additionally, those with post-compulsory education have experienced an unemployment increase of 12.57%, an alarming trend that has persisted since September 2025.
Both among young people and highly qualified professionals, women appear to be suffering a disproportionate impact. This suggests that current labour policies may not be adequately addressing the specific needs of these vulnerable groups.
According to the Unemployment Report prepared by the Local Development Observatory of the County Council, although there has been an overall decrease in unemployment of 1.83% compared to the previous month and a notable drop of 3.18% compared to the same period last year, it is crucial to continue monitoring these trends to ensure that all population sectors benefit equally.
