Actions by the City Council to ensure public health
In an effort to safeguard the health of citizens, the Mataró City Council has conducted a rigorous inspection of 34 convenience stores, known as 24-hour shops, between February and April. This initiative aims to ensure that these establishments comply with current food safety regulations.
The campaign has resulted in the opening of six sanctioning files against businesses that have not adhered to the precautionary measures imposed after irregularities were detected. Of the premises inspected, deficiencies were identified in 17, leading to corrective measures being applied. The most common irregularities were related to inadequate conditions in the areas designated for bread cooking; specifically, 15 establishments did not meet the necessary requirements.
Aside from the issues in the cooking areas, one establishment was found to be portioning unlabeled products in an inappropriate area, and another lacked running water. Despite these deficiencies, nine shops managed to correct their issues, allowing for the lifting of the imposed precautionary measures. However, six businesses continued to operate without making the necessary corrections and now face penalties.
As this campaign progresses, five shops have been selected for a more thorough inspection due to an imminent risk to public health. These actions are being coordinated by the Servei de Salut Pública i Control Ambiental of the Mataró City Council.
Not only have hygiene and food safety issues been found; significant administrative irregularities have also been detected. Six establishments did not have the necessary license to operate as commercial activities. This finding underscores the importance of regulatory compliance in the local commercial sector.
Through these initiatives, the City Council reaffirms its commitment to protecting citizen welfare and promoting responsible business practices in Mataró.
