The Barcelona City Council has announced an investment of €2.72 million to transform Artesania Street, located in the Guineueta neighbourhood within the Nou Barris district. This project aims to enhance the quality of the urban space by widening sidewalks and creating more green areas, benefiting both pedestrians and local businesses.
Project details and its impact
The renovation will focus on a specific stretch between Via Júlia and Ponce de León, covering approximately 4,800 square metres. The intervention not only includes the widening of sidewalks but also the relocation of existing urban services and a reorganisation of the space in front of commercial premises and residences. This will allow for smoother circulation for pedestrians and improve overall access to the area.
The district councillor, Xavier Marcé, has highlighted that this street is crucial for connecting nearby neighbourhoods such as Canyelles, as well as being a nerve centre for commercial activities. “Artesania Street not only serves as a traffic axis, but it is also a place where much of the neighbourhood traffic is concentrated,” Marcé stated.
“The action is significant due to the role this street plays as a connection between neighbourhoods,” said Xavier Marcé.
One of the primary objectives of the project is to increase the presence of trees in the area. The new design is expected to allow for visual continuity with the nearby Guineueta Park, thus integrating more green spaces into the urban environment. This initiative responds to a growing public demand for more sustainable and pleasant living areas.
Although the project has been initially approved by the Government Commission, it will need to go through a public information period before being put out to tender. The works are scheduled to begin in early 2027, with an estimated duration until the end of the same year. This renovation is part of the ambitious Municipal Investment Programme (PIM) 2024-2027, which has a total budget exceeding €1.9 billion.
In addition to the project on Artesania Street, plans are in place to invest another €1.15 million to improve green areas in Angel Pestaña square, located in the neighbouring Prosperitat district. Furthermore, another significant project is underway: the rehabilitation of the historic farmhouse known as Can Carreres, which will receive nearly €9 million. This building will be transformed into a public facility intended to house a municipal nursery school.
As Barcelona moves towards a more sustainable and inclusive urban model, these initiatives reflect a clear commitment to improving urban conditions in less favoured districts like Nou Barris. The planned transformation of Artesania Street aims not only to beautify the environment but also to foster greater social cohesion among its residents.
Through these significant reforms, Barcelona continues its journey towards more liveable cities where every corner has suitable spaces for both residents and visitors.
