The Barcelona City Council has approved an investment of 2.72 million euros for the renovation of Carrer de l’Artesania, located in the Guineueta neighbourhood, within the Nou Barris district. This intervention, which will begin in 2027, aims primarily to improve accessibility and public space by widening sidewalks and increasing green areas with new plantings.
Project details and its social impact
The renovation will focus on the initial stretch of Carrer de l’Artesania, between Via Júlia and Carrer de Ponce de León. It will cover an approximate area of 4,800 m², which will also involve the relocation of certain services and the expansion of spaces in front of commercial premises and residences. According to Xavier Marcé, district councillor, this work is essential as it connects several important neighbourhoods such as Verdum, Guineueta, and Canyelles.
“With this investment, we are putting all the machinery in motion to decisively improve accessibility and the quality of public space,” Marcé stated.
The project not only aims to beautify the urban environment but also to foster a safer and more friendly atmosphere for pedestrians. The intervention aligns with the objectives of the Endreça Plan, which seeks to revitalise urban areas through significant infrastructure improvements.
In addition to this specific renovation, it is expected that before the end of the term, renovations will take place on another ten streets within the same district. This demonstrates a clear commitment from the municipal government to modernise Nou Barris and ensure that its residents have adequate spaces for comfortable walking.
The funds allocated for this renovation come from the Municipal Investment Programme (PIM) 2024-2027, which includes a total injection of over 1.9 billion euros for all of Barcelona. This programme aims to ensure access to decent housing and provide new opportunities for Barcelonans while addressing climate change.
In particular, within the PIM framework, an additional investment of 1.15 million euros has been defined to comprehensively improve green spaces in Plaça d’Àngel Pestaña, also located in Nou Barris. These actions are an integral part of a larger effort to revitalise neglected or deteriorated urban areas.
Apart from road renovations, another significant project is taking place nearby: the comprehensive rehabilitation of the Can Carreres farmhouse. With an estimated investment of nearly 9 million euros, this old building will be transformed into a new public facility that will house a municipal nursery school (EBM) as well as a team dedicated to child and youth care (EAIA).
“We are committed to modernising our neighbourhoods,” Marcé concluded, referring to the positive impact these works will have on the residents.
All these initiatives reflect a coordinated effort by the City Council not only to improve physical infrastructure but also to enhance the social fabric within these Barcelonan neighbourhoods.
