The mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, handed over the keys to 64 public housing units in the Trinitat Nova neighbourhood on Thursday, a significant step in the fight against the housing crisis affecting many families in the city. This event was attended by the Minister of Housing, Isabel Rodríguez, and marks an important advance in the municipal government's commitment to increasing the stock of public housing.
Details about the new homes
Of the 64 units delivered, 20 are for social rent and 44 are for affordable rent. These homes have been allocated to individuals registered in the Official Protected Housing Applicants Registry of Barcelona (RSHPOB). With this delivery, a total of 2,201 keys have been handed over during this term, demonstrating the local government's effort to accelerate the production of public housing.
Throughout the current term, 162 homes have been delivered in Nou Barris, with an additional 142 new units expected to be built by 2026. Mayor Collboni highlighted that these initiatives are essential to ensure that residents can remain in their neighbourhoods and enjoy the right to decent housing.
The criteria for accessing these new homes vary according to the type of rent. For social housing, applicants must have annual incomes between €4,000 and €25,898, while for affordable housing, incomes must range from €16,000 to €69,199. This differentiation aims to address the diverse economic needs within the neighbourhood.
Within the affordable rental group, specific units have been reserved: 15 for local residents, 13 for young people under 35, and others designated for single-parent families or those with special needs. Monthly prices range between €423.75 and €666.96, depending on the size of the apartment.
It is not only about providing more homes; there is also a clear focus on sustainability. The development includes features such as photovoltaic panels for shared electrical self-consumption and a design aimed at minimising environmental impact. The construction has been carried out by the Municipal Housing Institute (IMHAB) along with specialised architectural teams.
Through the efficient use of space and sustainable materials, these new homes aim to be not only functional but also environmentally friendly. It is expected that these measures will significantly contribute to the overall economic and ecological well-being of the area.
As Barcelona moves towards its ultimate goal — delivering a projected total of 3,000 keys before the end of the term, thereby reaching a total public stock of nearly 15,000 protected homes by 2027, more housing projects are being planned in Nou Barris.

As work continues in other strategic locations like Palamós with new developments planned, it is clear that Barcelona is committed to tackling one of its greatest challenges: ensuring access to decent housing for all its citizens.
