This summer, Barcelona will complete significant urban renovations, including the paving of Balmes Street and Meridiana Avenue. These efforts aim to enhance public spaces and transportation infrastructure.

As summer unfolds in Barcelona, the city is set to finalize numerous extensive urban renovation projects aimed at improving public spaces and transportation systems. The most notable of these is the paving of Balmes Street, which will commence this July, marking the end of a long-term project that began in fall 2024.

Paving Projects Transform Key Streets

The renovation of Balmes Street between Plaça Molina and Ronda del General Mitre is expected to significantly enhance pedestrian accessibility. This initiative involves expanding sidewalks by nearly two meters and planting over a hundred new trees across 15,000 square meters. The work will completely close the street to traffic starting July 12, allowing for uninterrupted paving operations.

Simultaneously, Meridiana Avenue will undergo phased paving from late July through mid-August. This careful approach aims to minimize disruption while maintaining traffic flow in both directions. However, local bus services may experience delays as certain routes are adjusted during construction.

Rambla Enhancements Before Final Phase

This summer also marks crucial improvements along the Rambla, particularly on its Gothic side. Planned works include resurfacing sections that were previously renovated four years ago but require updates for better durability and efficiency. These enhancements are scheduled between August 3 and August 16.

Covering Ronda de Dalt for Public Space Expansion

A significant development this season is the initiation of covering sections of Ronda de Dalt. This project aims to create over 16,000 square meters of new public space once completed. Nighttime lane closures will be implemented from July 19 to August 6 to facilitate installation work without major disruptions during peak hours.

Transport Infrastructure Upgrades Underway

The city’s transport network is also receiving attention with ongoing upgrades to various metro lines and tram services. Notably, the extension of Line L8 by FGC will result in temporary lane reductions around Plaça d’Espanya from June until September. Additionally, TMB plans comprehensive renovations on multiple metro lines that may affect service availability throughout the summer months.

A Comprehensive Urban Renewal Plan

This ambitious series of projects falls under Barcelona’s broader urban renewal strategy aimed at enhancing quality of life for residents while preparing for climate change challenges. Laia Bonet, First Deputy Mayor responsible for Urbanism and Mobility, emphasized that these transformations prioritize public transport accessibility while modernizing infrastructure.

The city’s commitment extends beyond mere aesthetics; it reflects a vision for sustainable urban living that accommodates future needs.

A New Digital Platform for Transparency

<pto improve communication regarding ongoing works, Barcelona has launched an updated municipal website dedicated to construction projects. This platform provides real-time information about ongoing renovations across the city with geolocation features designed for user-friendly navigation on mobile devices.

This initiative aims not only to inform citizens but also to engage them actively in understanding how these changes impact their daily lives.
