In a significant development for the Gràcia district, construction has commenced on the Font del Carbó gardens, transforming a previously inaccessible area into a vibrant community park. This initiative aims to enhance local green spaces and improve accessibility for residents, addressing long-standing requests from the neighborhood.
Transforming an underutilized space
The project will revamp the gardens located near Park Güell, with an estimated budget of €3.6 million and a timeline of 24 months. Currently closed to the public, this area will be redesigned to include community gardens, new vegetation, shaded resting spots, and a small amphitheater for gatherings.
The renovation plans emphasize creating distinct zones within the park. The upper section will feature gathering areas while the lower part will provide shaded spaces. Additionally, there will be enclosed community gardens situated centrally within the park. The design also incorporates various meeting points and a slide that utilizes the existing topography.
Preserving existing flora is a key aspect of this project. Many viable trees will remain intact while two biodiversity zones are planned to support local wildlife, including bee habitats accompanied by educational signage. Restoration efforts will also focus on iconic elements such as the Font del Carbó itself and surrounding stone wall systems that have deteriorated over time.
This initiative not only aims to beautify the area but also seeks to improve pedestrian mobility throughout the neighborhood. New pathways will connect Antequera Street with Marianao Street via the interior of the renovated gardens, facilitating easier access for residents.
The revitalization of Font del Carbó is part of a broader improvement plan for Park Güell and its surroundings scheduled from 2023 to 2027, which carries an overall budget of €39 million. Funding for these enhancements comes from revenue generated by entrance fees to Park Güell.
The push for this transformation reflects ongoing efforts by local residents who have long advocated for better access to green spaces in their neighborhood. By converting these gardens into an open park accessible to all, city planners hope to foster community engagement and promote environmental sustainability.
