Every summer brings the same question: bikini or swimsuit? What seems like a simple decision actually hides a world of options, cuts, and fabrics that can make the difference between feeling comfortable on the beach or spending the day readjusting your outfit. Swimwear fashion has evolved so much in recent years that it’s no longer just about covering up or revealing, but about finding the piece that fits your body, your style, and the plan you have in mind.

If your priority is freedom of movement and the ability to mix and match, a bikini is probably your best ally. The great advantage of two pieces is that you can mix sizes and styles according to different parts of your body: a top with more support on top and a high-waisted bottom, for example, is one of the most sought-after combinations because it flatters the silhouette and offers extra support in the abdominal area.

The Cuts That Are Trending This Season

Among the most sought-after models right now are bikinis with bandeau tops with underwire, which offer more support than they appear and work very well for medium and large sizes. Side ties on the bottoms remain a classic that never goes out of style, especially because they allow for adjusting the volume at the hips to each person’s liking.

As for prints, animal print continues to reign supreme, especially in earthy tones and black. But if you’re looking for something more timeless, solid colours in navy blue, bottle green, or cherry red are a safe bet that withstands several seasons without going out of fashion.

The Swimsuit: Comfort Without Sacrificing Style

Women’s swimsuits have made one of the biggest comebacks in fashion in recent years. Far from the functional image of the past, today they are pieces with as much design as any bikini: deep V necklines, side cutouts, crisscross straps on the back, or cut-out details that turn them into genuine fashion statements.

They are especially recommended for water activities such as snorkelling, paddle surfing, or simply a day of lots of movement in the water, as you don’t have to worry about the top at any moment. They are also the favourite choice of many women who prefer not to expose their abdomen while still maintaining a polished look.

How to Choose According to Your Body Type?

Beyond trends, what truly makes a difference is choosing the right model for your figure:

  • Large Bust: look for tops with underwire, wide straps, and back closures. Avoid bandeaus without additional support.
  • Wide Hips: high-waisted bikini bottoms or swimsuits with a V neckline draw attention to the upper body and visually elongate the figure.
  • Small Bust: tops with ruffles, gathers, or padding create volume naturally. Triangle tops also look great.
  • Straight Figure: cuts with details at the waist — bows, openings, or draping — add curves and break the linearity of the silhouette.

The Fabric Matters More Than It Seems

One detail that is often overlooked is the fabric composition. For pool use, it’s advisable to look for materials resistant to chlorine, as conventional fabrics deteriorate quickly with prolonged contact with chemicals. For beach and occasional swimming, a blend of polyamide and elastane is the most common and offers good value for money.

Specialised brands in lingerie and swimwear like Hunkemöller work with technical fabrics specifically designed to withstand the wear and tear of continuous use, something that is particularly noticeable when you’re looking for pieces that last more than one season.
