In anticipation of the Sant Joan celebrations, Renfe has announced significant enhancements to the Rodalies de Catalunya service. This initiative aims to accommodate the expected surge in travelers heading to popular coastal areas from Barcelona. The adjustments will take effect during the night of June 23-24, ensuring that residents and visitors can easily access beaches along the Garraf and Maresme coasts.

Expanded train services and security measures

The operator will increase train capacity on key routes, with trains running at approximately 30-minute intervals. This schedule applies to major lines connecting Barcelona with coastal destinations. Additionally, Renfe is implementing enhanced security measures by deploying 86 extra security personnel throughout the network.

A special train service on the R2 Sud line, which connects Sant Vicenç de Calders to Estació de França via Vilanova i la Geltrú, will operate late on June 23. A train is scheduled to depart from Estació de França at 11:36 PM, making stops at all stations until it reaches Vilanova i la Geltrú at 12:37 AM. Another train departing shortly after at 11:49 PM will also extend its route to Vilanova.

The following morning, a special service from Sant Vicenç de Calders is set for 5:30 AM, arriving at Estació de França by 6:50 AM, with stops at all stations except Garraf.

The R1 line will see similar enhancements for those traveling towards Maresme. On June 23, two special trains are scheduled from L’Hospitalet de Llobregat to Mataró, departing at 11:09 PM and 11:57 PM. These services will also stop at all intermediate stations.

This reinforcement aligns with Renfe’s commitment to ensuring safe and efficient travel during peak times. Regular holiday schedules will be in place on both June 23 and June 24 between L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Mataró, and Calella.

The Sant Joan celebration is a long-standing tradition in Catalonia, marked by bonfires and fireworks that attract large crowds to coastal areas. Recognizing this annual influx of travelers, Renfe’s proactive measures aim not only to facilitate movement but also enhance safety across its services.

The company stated that these adjustments are crucial for maintaining smooth operations during one of the busiest nights of the year.

This year’s enhancements reflect an ongoing effort by Renfe to adapt its services according to passenger needs while promoting public transport as a viable option for festive outings. As more people choose sustainable travel options, such initiatives play a vital role in reducing congestion on roads leading out of Barcelona.

The increased accessibility provided by these additional services is expected to benefit local businesses along the coast significantly. Restaurants, bars, and shops in popular tourist spots like Vilanova i la Geltrú stand to gain from heightened foot traffic as celebrants flock to enjoy the festivities.

A spokesperson for Renfe emphasized that “these efforts not only support our passengers but also contribute positively to local economies.”

This strategic enhancement underscores Renfe’s commitment not just as a transportation provider but as an integral part of Catalonia’s cultural landscape during festive occasions like Sant Joan. As preparations continue for this year’s celebrations, both locals and tourists can look forward to a seamless travel experience thanks to these timely improvements.
