Intelligent surveillance systems are now operational on several Catalan beaches, enhancing lifeguard capabilities. This innovative technology aims to detect drowning patterns in real-time.
In a groundbreaking move for beach safety, Catalonia has introduced intelligent surveillance systems designed to assist lifeguards in preventing drownings. Developed by Laif, a company spun off from Proactiva, this advanced technology analyzes the behavior of individuals in the water and identifies patterns that may indicate a potential drowning.
The system, which began its rollout after a successful pilot program last summer, is currently operational at multiple locations including Badalona, Playa de Aro, Roses, and Vilassar de Mar. Additionally, it has been installed at a swimming pool in Barcelona and will soon expand to other regions such as Tenerife’s Los Cristianos beach.
The control center for this initiative is located in Vilassar de Dalt, where technicians monitor live footage through a sophisticated multi-screen interface akin to those used in traffic management centers. Unlike traditional cameras that merely record video, these AI-powered devices actively analyze movements and behaviors of all individuals within their view.
“We detect patterns compatible with possible drowning,” explains Oriol Canals, co-founder of Laif. When the system identifies concerning behavior, it triggers an alert that is reviewed by operators before being sent to rescue teams. This proactive approach aims to ensure timely intervention when someone is struggling or incapacitated in the water.
The development of this technology involved extensive training over several months. Engineers simulated various scenarios involving individuals fighting to stay afloat or becoming unconscious. Such rigorous preparation is crucial for ensuring accurate detection under real conditions.
Despite its promising capabilities, Laif has yet to be involved in any actual rescues since its deployment began. Canals attributes this lack of incidents to the early stage of implementation and the absence of drownings at monitored sites thus far. However, numerous false positives have emerged during testing phases; these are viewed positively as they help refine the system’s accuracy without impacting rescue operations.
The goal is for the AI technology to improve over time through accumulated data and experience. “Eventually, we will encounter someone truly experiencing a drowning situation, and our technology will be able to detect it early enough for action,” Canals asserts.
This initiative does not aim to replace human lifeguards but rather serves as an additional layer of safety that complements their efforts. The system can operate alongside on-site lifeguards or independently activate emergency services when no personnel are present.
The expansion of these smart cameras across Catalonia marks a significant step forward in utilizing artificial intelligence for public safety measures at beaches—a critical area where timely intervention can save lives.
