The Ministry of Transport has finalized key road connections in Sant Boi, improving access to the C-32. This project, costing €65.8 million, aims to ease traffic flow and enhance safety.
In a significant development for local infrastructure, the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has completed essential road links in Sant Boi de Llobregat. The newly finished connections include the Sant Boi north link and the Sant Boi-Cornellà junction, which now facilitate smoother access to the C-32 highway towards Castelldefels.
The project represents a substantial investment of €65.8 million, aimed at improving traffic management and safety in the region. Earlier this year, on April 30, a 1.95-kilometer stretch of the new highway was opened to vehicles, followed by an additional 11.9 kilometers of new roads made accessible on May 21.
While these crucial links are now operational, further work remains ongoing in Sant Boi. Two parking facilities are still under construction along with a bicycle lane and comprehensive environmental integration around the northern link area. Additionally, improvements are planned for southbound access from the C-31 towards El Prat and enhancements along the Ponent ring road in El Prat de Llobregat.
This extensive project is known as the Sant Boi variant or Llobregat knot and has its roots dating back to before the Barcelona Olympic Games. Initially launched in 2009, it faced numerous delays that left many sections incomplete for years.
The completed Sant Boi north link now connects residents directly with both BV-2022 and B-25 through an urban system featuring two roundabouts designed to integrate seamlessly with local traffic patterns while preserving natural pathways along the Llobregat River.
The Sant Boi-Cornellà link (also referred to as La Parellada) plays a pivotal role in redistributing traffic from C-245 into central Sant Boi, directing vehicles towards urban areas including Salinas industrial park and linking up with the new elliptical roundabout that connects with both B-25 and BV-2002 routes. This modernized roundabout replaces an older design that had been notorious for safety issues.
A total of 24 structures, either newly constructed or expanded, have been incorporated into this project to ensure effective multi-level connections while maintaining accessibility across various barriers such as waterways, roads, railways, and existing pathways disrupted by construction.
The completion of these links not only enhances connectivity but also aims to reduce congestion significantly in one of Catalonia’s bustling regions.
