Barcelona City Council has taken action as a private prosecution in six cases against repeat offenders. Three of them are already in provisional prison.
The City Council of Barcelona has presented its status as a private prosecution in six judicial proceedings against repeat offenders of property crimes. Among the suspects, three have been sent to provisional prison, and collectively they have 298 police records.
This measure is supported by the amendment introduced by Organic Law 1/2026, of April 8, regarding repeat offending. The mechanism was activated in mid this year through a coordinated work circuit involving the Barcelona Urban Guard, municipal legal services, and the relevant police bodies.
“The message from the City Council of Barcelona is that, in the cases of those who are committing crimes more frequently, we are taking action as a private prosecution,” assured Mayor Jaume Collboni in an interview on the Café d'Idees programme on La2.
According to municipal sources, one of the cases with provisional prison involves a person with 64 records, mostly for property crimes. The police investigation confirmed a repeated criminal activity in the city, and after analysing their police and judicial records, the council took action in the procedure.
Another suspect, with 58 records, of which 40 are for property crimes, was arrested following a police operation in Gaudí Square for theft. His situation also resulted in provisional prison. The third detainee, with a broad criminal history mainly linked to repeated thefts in Barcelona, completes the group of those imprisoned.
The courts have also agreed on other precautionary measures. One of these prohibits a repeat offender from entering the city of Barcelona until the trial is held.
