Barcelona City Council will have two months to develop and implement a fire prevention plan for container fires in Guinardó and Baix Guinardó. The measure was unanimously approved by the municipal commission.
Container fires are recurring in Guinardó, Barcelona, always in the same locations and almost always at dawn, very close to residential areas. Residents have filed several complaints and gathered signatures, but they claim that the containers reappear in the same spots the next day.
The Presidency, Security and Internal Regime Commission has unanimously approved a proposal from the municipal group Esquerra Republicana. Voting in favour were ERC, Junts, PSC, BComú, PP and Vox, and the text obliges the municipal government to develop and implement a prevention plan in Guinardó and Baix Guinardó within a maximum period of two months.
“A municipal plan for the prevention and reduction of the risk of container fires in the public streets of Guinardó and Baix Guinardó.”
The plan must include four measures. The first is to identify risk points and review the location of containers with the firefighters, subsequently relocating them where necessary. The second is a pilot test with metal, fireproof or high-resistance containers in the areas with the most incidents.
The third measure aims to strengthen coordination between the Urban Guard, Mossos d’Esquadra, Firefighters, and cleaning services, focusing on the points and time slots with the most incidents. The fourth is to establish a schedule of actions and a monitoring system.
For the residents of Guinardó, the change will be noticeable if the location of the containers is reviewed and metal models are installed in the most affected streets. The first milestone will be when the municipal government presents the schedule, within the two-month deadline.
