Joint operation between Spain and Brazil
In a significant blow against drug trafficking, the Spanish National Police, in collaboration with Brazilian authorities, has dismantled a criminal organization operating between the international airports of Sao Paulo and Barcelona. The operation, which took place on April 15, 2026, resulted in the arrest of five individuals: four in Spain and one in Brazil.
The investigation began in late November 2025, when three employees of Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat airport were arrested after attempting to introduce 162 kilograms of cocaine hidden in large suitcases. These workers, with over ten years of experience in their positions, used their knowledge of the airport system to evade regular checks.
The criminal organization exploited the privileged position of its members within the airport. According to police reports, the process began with the receipt of the drugs on flights from Brazil. Coordinated employees would divert the suitcases loaded with narcotics before they passed through regular checks. Subsequently, a third member outside the service was responsible for removing the contaminated suitcases from the premises.
The crucial role of the Brazilian employee
Through thorough analysis and international coordination, Brazilian authorities managed to identify an airport employee who used a tractor to transport the suitcases to the aircraft bound for Barcelona. This individual was arrested during a subsequent operation where a gun with its serial number filed off was also confiscated.
The operation has been described as a resounding success by the National Police, who claim to have cut off a significant channel for air drug trafficking to Spain. Additionally, during the searches carried out, over 39,000 euros, imitation firearms, and an indoor plantation with over 300 marijuana plants were seized.
Among those arrested is a businessman from Baix Llobregat considered the main coordinator behind the criminal scheme. This individual was responsible not only for managing the implicated workers but also for establishing contacts with suppliers in Brazil to ensure continuous shipments.

As this transnational investigation progresses, police forces have emphasized their commitment to eradicating similar networks that threaten public safety and foster organized crime both in Spain and in other European countries.
