The level 4 deployment, the highest planned for public demonstrations, remains active this Saturday in Barcelona. Officers are already identifying individuals who may be carrying dangerous objects.
The Mossos d'Esquadra have activated their level 4 security in central Barcelona, the highest level anticipated for street mobilisations. This measure responds to the call from the group Blocus, which has encouraged protests this Saturday and raised fears of disturbances in various parts of the city.
From 3 PM, officers have begun to set up preventive checks to detect individuals who may be carrying dangerous items. According to the Catalan police in a statement, this initial phase aims to identify those who could provoke incidents.
The operation is concentrated mainly in Plaza de Cataluña and its surroundings, where Mossos vehicles are controlling access. Surveillance also extends to Paseo de Gracia, Portal del Ángel, and the entrances to the metro.
By 4 PM, the operation remained preventive, involving both the Mossos and the Guardia Urbana de Barcelona. In addition to vehicles, several patrols are walking the streets of the centre looking for signs related to the call.
The president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, has commented on the planned protests for this Saturday on the social media platform X. He assured that the Mossos are prepared and defended the festive nature of the day.
“La Castanyada is for everyone and is celebrated in the street.”
Illa warned that anyone participating in looting will face justice and reminded that those detained on the 24th are already being tried. He concluded his message by stating that no one is guilty because of their origin.
“Anyone who comes to loot will face justice.”
For local residents and shopkeepers in the centre, the deployment means checks at access points and possible diversions of pedestrian traffic during the afternoon. The police will maintain level 4 for the duration of Saturday, so it is advisable to consult the Mossos before heading to the area.
