The conviction that shook the Mossos d’Esquadra
The Lleida Court has issued a ruling against an officer of the Mossos d’Esquadra, who has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for his involvement in a drug trafficking operation that involved the importation of 620 kilos of cocaine. This case, which came to light at the end of 2021, has put the integrity of the Catalan police force in jeopardy.
The court determined that the officer actively collaborated in the financing and logistics of the drug shipment, providing 85,000 euros to facilitate transportation from Panama. Additionally, he was responsible for renting a warehouse in the El Segre industrial estate, where the rotor containing the cocaine was stored. The sentence also includes an exorbitant fine of 28 million euros.
Despite the evidence presented during the trial, including phone taps linking him directly to the operation, the officer denied any direct involvement. During his testimony, he argued that his participation was limited to renting the space to store vehicles and materials, completely unaware of the illicit intentions behind the shipment.
However, one of the co-defendants defended the officer, claiming he had nothing to do with the criminal operation. This statement has caused confusion regarding the true extent of the officer's involvement in this criminal network.
The initial investigation began when the Risk Analysis Unit detected a suspicious shipment at the port of Barcelona. After opening the rotor with specialized assistance, agents found 537 packages with an 80% purity, initially valued at over 22 million euros. This discovery marked a milestone as the largest seizure recorded in Lleida.
Following the scandal, four co-defendants have accepted lesser sentences after acknowledging their guilt. The sentences range from two to six years due to agreements reached during the judicial process. However, the investigated officer chose not to accept a similar deal and will face a significantly harsher penalty.
This case not only highlights the flaws within the police system but also exposes how criminal organizations have managed to infiltrate to unsuspected levels within the forces responsible for public safety.
