A commitment to social housing
The councillor of Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, Maria Eugènia Gay, has announced an ambitious plan that will transform the housing landscape of the district. In three years, the creation of 200 new public homes is expected, an initiative that responds to the growing demand for affordable housing solutions in Barcelona.
During her tenure, Gay has emphasised the importance of defending the rights of the most vulnerable citizens. Her experience as a lawyer and dean has provided her with a unique perspective on the social needs of the district. “Housing is a priority for this government,” she states, highlighting that this will be the largest investment in social housing in the history of Sarrià-Sant Gervasi.
Despite obstacles, such as the complicated legal process related to properties like Can Raventós, Gay remains optimistic. Although some projects have faced difficulties, such as the lack of willingness from owners to negotiate swaps, significant progress has been made. The councillor highlights that thanks to persistent efforts, municipal plots have been secured that will be allocated for public housing.
The plan also includes a reservation of 30% of the new developments to ensure that these homes are accessible to those who need them most. “When I took office, there were only 73 flats available; now we are talking about a total of 273,” Gay explains with satisfaction.
In addition to the focus on housing, the district is taking proactive measures to address other social and cultural issues. The councillor has been working in collaboration with various entities and residents to ensure that their voices are heard and their needs are met. This participatory approach is fundamental to building a more cohesive and supportive community.
Gay has also recently participated in sessions organised by the UN on human rights and women, where she highlighted how Barcelona positions itself as a global benchmark in defending these rights. “Cities must be strong and raise their voices,” she emphasises while discussing support for Palestinian communities affected by recent conflicts.
As we move towards May 2027, Maria Eugènia Gay does not rule out her continuation in office. “I am enjoying my work and feel that I am useful,” she comments while reflecting on her political journey so far. With concrete plans to improve both urban infrastructure and housing conditions, it is clear that her commitment to Sarrià-Sant Gervasi is steadfast.
