A new onslaught of wind hits Catalonia
On March 29, 2026, Catalonia was once again affected by an intense wind episode that left in its wake seven people injured, although fortunately without serious injuries. This meteorological phenomenon, which has been classified as the third in a short period of six weeks, generated gusts exceeding 169 km/h in the higher areas of Portbou and reached 100 km/h in various towns in the Pyrenees and Terres de l’Ebre.
Among the most notable incidents, it was reported that three people, including a woman and two minors, were injured when struck by a metal sheet at a campsite located in Sant Llorenç de Montgai. Although their injuries were minor, two of them required transfer to the Arnau de Vilanova hospital in Lleida for medical attention.
At another campsite located in Platja d’Aro, a Belgian customer was treated after being hit by a fallen branch. As a precautionary measure, the campsite management decided to close the affected area, known for its dense tree cover. In other towns such as Blanes and Calonge, similar incidents were reported where women were struck by flying objects; fortunately, one of them emerged unscathed.
The impact of the wind was not limited to injuries; it also caused severe traffic disruptions. At least fifteen roads were closed due to fallen trees on the roadway. In particular, the AP-7 experienced the closure of one of its lanes near Vilademuls, resulting in significant traffic congestion.
On the rail front, Renfe temporarily suspended train services on the R11 and R3 lines until mid-afternoon. To mitigate the inconvenience for affected passengers, an alternative service was set up to cover these disrupted routes.
The Baix Empordà region was one of the most affected during this extreme weather event. With gusts reaching up to 117 km/h, emergency services received over a thousand reports related to structural damage. In Platja d’Aro, the gale destroyed shop windows and uprooted numerous trees, both public and private.
Not only did the wind wreak havoc; it also left a rough sea along the northern Costa Brava with waves reaching up to 9 meters. In Colera, part of a church roof was blown off due to the intense gusts; meanwhile, Berga suffered considerable damage in its industrial estate.
As a result of the dangerous storm generated by these strong winds, even religious activities such as the Palm Sunday procession scheduled for that day in Camprodon were suspended.
