A city in crisis

Badalona, one of the most emblematic cities in Catalonia, is at the eye of the storm due to the growing social crisis affecting its most vulnerable inhabitants. In a recent extraordinary plenary session, opposition parties denounced the alarming situation of homelessness and linked the tragic deaths of homeless individuals to the lack of adequate social resources.

Despite urgent requests from the PSC, ERC, Comuns, and Guanyem to reactivate the social shelter, the local government led by the PP has dismissed these initiatives. Mayor Xavier Garcia Albiol announced that a new social dining facility is being developed, but did not provide immediate solutions for current issues. Deputy Mayor Eva Guillén defended the government's management and attributed the closure of the old shelter to financial problems inherited from the previous administration.

The situation is critical: according to recent data, Badalona leads what some have termed a “shame ranking” with 629 homeless individuals. This figure was cited by Àlex Montornès (ERC), who emphasized that the lack of housing alternatives is leading to a humanitarian crisis in the city. Dolors Sabater (Guanyem Badalona) also stressed how this situation has contributed to the rise of diseases and deaths among this vulnerable population.

Despite the rejection of several proposals by the municipal government, a new social dining facility has been announced that will be able to serve up to 32 people simultaneously. This project aims to provide food support to those in greatest need and is expected to begin construction in 2026. However, many critics consider these measures insufficient given the magnitude of the current problem.

The plenary also addressed the controversial eviction of the B9 settlement under the C-31. According to Albiol, this operation was not related to B9 and assured that housing alternatives were offered to those considered vulnerable. However, testimonies indicate that many rejected these social resources demanding permanent housing.

Government inaction has been described as “shameful” by several opposition leaders, who insist that it is essential to act urgently to prevent further tragedies.
