Alarming fires in Girona
This morning, the city of Girona was the scene of two fires that highlighted the issue of occupied properties. The first incident was reported shortly after 9:15 a.m. in abandoned warehouses located on the Barcelona road, where homeless individuals reside. In a second incident, a flat in the block situated on Ronda Ferran Puig was also consumed by flames.
Despite the swift intervention of three fire crews, who managed to extinguish the fire without any injuries reported, the incidents have caused concern among local residents. The old Simon factory, where the first fire occurred, has been the subject of multiple complaints from nearby residents due to frequent fights and criminal acts.
The City Council and its response
The Council has plans to transform this problematic space into the headquarters of the Ermessenda institute. However, for this to happen, the building must be transferred free of encumbrances to the Generalitat to begin the necessary works. In the meantime, Social Services is monitoring the individuals living in these warehouses.
This is not the first time these properties have been involved in similar incidents; just ten days ago, another fire left five people with minor injuries from smoke inhalation and forced a complete evacuation of the site. On this occasion, although there were no injuries or necessary evacuations, the incident highlights an alarming trend that could indicate a growing social crisis.
