A dream come true
After a long year of waiting, Benjamín and Esther, a young couple from Sabadell, have finally received the keys to their new home. This moment marks the end of an odyssey that began two years ago when they won a lottery to access a public housing unit promoted by Incasòl. The excitement is palpable on their faces as they prepare to move into their new flat at Ronda Europa 299, where they can leave behind life shared with their in-laws and enjoy the independence they have longed for.
Despite the enthusiasm for their new home, the couple cannot help but remember the challenges they faced over the past year. “We saw that the construction was already finished, but we worried that someone could occupy these flats,” they comment with concern. With tight salaries —Esther works as a cashier and Benjamín as a warehouse worker— it has been impossible for them to access a mortgage or pay the high rents of the current market. “In our area, prices exceed 900 euros a month for a small apartment,” laments Benjamín.
The official handover took place on March 26 and was presided over by Sílvia Paneque, the councillor for Territory and Housing, who explained that the delay in the handover was due to disagreements over costs with the construction company in charge of the project. Despite the economic difficulties that led to delays in negotiations, Paneque expressed her satisfaction at finally seeing this long-awaited housing project fulfilled.
Not only Benjamín and Esther celebrate this new chapter; other families also share similar stories. Sílvia, a nurse in Terrassa, has been paying exorbitant rent while waiting for her new home: “I have had to sacrifice a lot during this time,” she confesses. For her, this flat represents not only financial relief but also an opportunity to start saving.
Ana María and her daughter Nazari are other fortunate beneficiaries; they will live in one of the flats designated for social emergencies. Ana María expresses her gratitude for being able to move after facing serious economic difficulties due to health issues and disability in her family: “We have struggled to survive,” she states emotionally.
Eloi Cortés, deputy mayor of the Sabadell City Council, reaffirmed the council's commitment to promoting public housing as an essential priority. This initiative is particularly significant as it represents the first promotion by Incasòl in Sabadell in seven years. With this handover, it is hoped to alleviate part of the housing problem affecting many young and vulnerable families in the region.
