The Vila-seca Town Council has decided to take drastic measures for the celebration of the Sant Joan festivities, banning the use of firecrackers and restricting access to the protected areas of La Pineda. This decision aims to ensure a safer and more orderly environment during a festival that attracts thousands of people each year.
Special measures for a safe celebration
The mayor, Pere Segura, announced this Friday a special operation that will involve more than 70 personnel to control the expected influx of around 10,000 people. “We completely reject the Barcelona model of festivities, where public space is cannibalised,” Segura stated, emphasising the need to maintain order and protect natural spaces.
As the influx to La Pineda has grown exponentially in recent years, from hundreds to thousands, the authorities have deemed it necessary to implement stricter controls. The mayor highlighted that “the festivities cannot be synonymous with chaos” and stressed that non-compliance with the new regulations could result in fines of up to 3,000 euros.
For those with noise hypersensitivity, a firecracker-free area will be set up in the Pinar de Perruquet park. This park is considered a sensitive area due to its centenary pines and high fire risk. “San Juan should also be a celebration designed for those who need to experience this night with less noise,” Segura added.
The area affected by these restrictions covers approximately 2.3 kilometres along the promenade and the beach. Activities such as making bonfires, barbecues, or littering are prohibited in this area. Additionally, restricted access will be established throughout the night in the areas included in the Natura 2000 Network.
“Natural spaces are fragile and must be protected,” the mayor insisted.
Despite the restrictions in certain areas, there will be a part of the promenade where controlled use of firecrackers will be allowed. However, Segura emphasised that it is crucial to avoid images like those seen in Barcelona after past celebrations: beaches filled with rubbish the next day. “It’s a dreadful image that should be eradicated,” he concluded.
The decisions made by the Town Council reflect a significant change in how Vila-seca approaches the festivities. With a focus on public safety and environmental protection, these measures are expected to contribute to a more civic and respectful celebration of natural spaces.
As the magical night of June 23 to 24 approaches, both residents and visitors will need to adapt to these new regulations if they wish to fully enjoy the event without setbacks or penalties.
