Alarming Incidents on the Railway Network
Safety in railway transport has become an urgent concern following recent incidents caused by falling trees onto the Rodalies tracks. In just two days, up to six trees fell, severely affecting service and putting passengers at risk. Train drivers have raised their voices to demand a thorough investigation to clarify the causes and seek effective solutions.
Railway unions, including Alferro, have reported that the preventive measures implemented so far are insufficient. Despite Adif carrying out an emergency felling of over 10,000 trees since the tragic accident in Gelida, train drivers maintain that this has not been enough to mitigate the risk. “The trees fell in usual spots,” union sources state, highlighting the urgent need to review and reinforce current strategies.
One of the most concerning episodes occurred on Thursday night on the R3 line in Ripollès, where a train with passengers became trapped due to falling trees. The emergency train sent for the rescue also suffered damage after colliding with more fallen trees, resulting in broken windows and a damaged fuel tank. This incident highlights not only the lack of public information from Adif and Renfe about these events but also the system's vulnerability to adverse weather conditions.
On Friday morning, new problems were reported on the R11 line between Girona and Caldes de Malavella. This stretch is particularly dangerous as it allows speeds close to 140 km/h while passing through areas with abundant vegetation that can fall onto the tracks. Train drivers have alerted about this critical situation and demanded immediate protocols to halt service during severe weather episodes.
As these concerning incidents continue to occur, union representatives insist on the urgent need to review all actions taken since January. It is crucial to identify areas where work is still pending and prioritise both the safety of staff and the physical integrity of travellers.
Despite the outcry for clear responses and concrete actions, neither Adif nor Renfe have issued official statements regarding these recent events.
