Rodalies Renfe has significantly enhanced the functionality of elevators and escalators across its stations, with current operational rates reaching 86% and 96.3%, respectively. This turnaround follows a challenging transition to a new maintenance contractor.

In a remarkable turnaround, Rodalies Renfe has reported that the operational status of elevators and escalators in its network has improved dramatically since the transition to TKE Elevadores as the new maintenance contractor. As of now, 86% of elevators are functioning, up from just 47% in March 2025, while escalators have surged to an impressive 96.3%, compared to 54%% last year.

The shift from Schindler to TKE Elevadores on February 1, 2026, marked a pivotal moment for accessibility in Catalonia’s public transport system. The previous operator faced significant penalties exceeding €233,000 for neglecting repairs during their tenure. Complaints flooded social media as users expressed frustration over malfunctioning equipment.

Sílvia Paneque, the consellera de Territori, described the prior situation as “absolutely inadmissible.” She acknowledged that there was “certain negligence” in maintaining infrastructure which led to prolonged service interruptions during the transition period. However, she emphasized that current figures indicate a return to acceptable standards.

The initial phase under TKE involved resetting all systems deemed unreliable before implementing necessary repairs. This strategy was crucial for ensuring long-term reliability but temporarily worsened conditions as they addressed outstanding issues left by Schindler.

TKE Elevadores secured the contract worth over €8.5 million, covering approximately 250 elevators and escalators across 200 stations until 2029. A significant portion of this budget is allocated for renewing around 90 elevators and more than 40 escalators while also addressing preventive maintenance and vandalism repair.

This improvement comes at a time when public transport accessibility is under scrutiny globally. Historical data shows that similar transitions in public contracts often lead to temporary declines in service quality before improvements manifest—an experience echoed by various transit authorities worldwide.

The ongoing enhancements are expected to bolster user confidence in Rodalies services significantly. Commuters can now expect more reliable access at stations throughout Catalonia as TKE continues its work on upgrading facilities.

If you’re planning to use Rodalies soon, you can check real-time updates on elevator and escalator availability through their official website or mobile app for seamless travel experiences.
