Nine years after the illegal referendum of 2017, October 1 has become a fixed date for Catalan independence, comparable to the Diada or the birthday of Jordi Pujol. An opinion piece published by La Razón even proposes to officialise it as a regional holiday.

The 1st of October has become inextricably linked to the illegal referendum held in Catalonia in 2017. Nine years later, this date functions in the independentist social imagination as a significant day, on par with the Diada of September 11 or the birthday of Jordi Pujol, on June 9. This is suggested in an opinion piece published by La Razón, which reviews the folkloric drift of the procés and proposes to give official status to the anniversary.

The text describes the independence process as a pantomime that has ended up resembling a nationalist pilgrimage, echoing a film by Berlanga and a novel by Eduardo Mendoza. The proposal is to establish 1-O as a regional holiday in Catalonia starting next year, when the tenth anniversary of the consultation will be celebrated.

Among the activities suggested for this hypothetical holiday is an independentist pilgrimage to the Monastery of Montserrat, in the style of the pilgrimage that the Iliturgitans make with the Virgen de la Cabeza. Instead of flowers for La Moreneta, they would be offered to Carme Forcadell, and the ascent would be made on Catalan donkeys.

Another idea is to recreate the police clashes during the referendum day as if it were a battle of Moors and Christians, similar to those celebrated in eastern Spain. A guided tour of the Holy Sites of the procés is also proposed, from the door of the Ministry of Finance where the Jordis climbed onto some cars to the entrance of the Parlament de la Generalitat, where the DUI was proclaimed and suspended.

The article mentions the possibility of La Legión landing in the port of Barcelona from a replica of the Piolín cruiser, as it does during Holy Week in Málaga, and that Jordi Évole could act as the town crier showing videos of the police on his tablet.

In the musical section, the text proposes a lineup featuring Estopa, a tribute to Jarabe de Palo, a rociero choir from Huelva, Leño, Golpes bajos, Bertín Osborne, and José Manuel Soto as headliners, along with a collaboration on Soy español with Valtònyc.

The bullfighting proposal also has a place: to revive bullfighting in the Plaza Monumental de Barcelona, fifteen years after the last bullfight, that of Serafín Marín with the senyera and Albert Rivera in the stands. A bull run featuring Morante de la Puebla with six bulls is suggested while Carlos Herrera, raised in Mataró, smokes Dominican cigars in the alley, and a toast to Carles Puigdemont as the president of the event.

“In the absence of independence, good are some Núñez del Cuvillo”

The article closes with this phrase, summarising the satirical tone of a proposal that currently has no official standing but reflects how 1-O continues to occupy a central place in the symbolic calendar of Catalan independence.
